Bloodiest Quarter For U.S. Troops in Iraq

With 101 American soldiers being killed in the month of June in Iraq, it marked the third straight month of over one hundred deaths.  The second quarter of 2007 goes down as the deadliest quarter since the U.S. invasion over four years ago.  A total of 332 American forces have been killed since the beginning of April, a grim number to be sure.

The numbers are not much better for civilians or Iraqi police.  Over 1,200 civilians died violently in June at a rate of forty per day.  Surprisingly, that figure actually lower than the month of May.  The average body count per day has been much higher in previous time periods.  Another 222 Iraqi soldiers and police were killed in June, slightly more than the month before.

What do all these numbers mean?  To me, it says that violence is still increasing against U.S. forces, while decreasing slightly against civilians.  Insurgents are running out of civilians to kill and concentrating their efforts against American soldiers.

There is not much out there to believe the situation in Iraq will improve anytime soon.  The American public is way ahead of the politicians in Washington.  More and more people are in favor of a complete withdrawal or a significant reduction in forces.  Up until now, Congress has been too cowardly to do anything to that end.  Maybe now that the polls are moving in that direction, they'll wake up.
