The Difference Between Us and Them

I read a right-wing, political blog the other day that suggested we carpet-bomb the entire Sunni triangle.  At the time, I thought it was a crazy idea, however now I may be moving in that direction.

Today, the two missing soldiers that the U.S. military were looking for were found dead in Iraq after being severely tortured.  Their bodies were beheaded, mutilated, and booby-trapped.  The bodies were so destroyed that DNA tests had to be done to identify them.  An insurgent group claimed responsibility on a website, claiming that they had been "slaughtered" in accordance with God's will.

Now if that doesn't give you an idea of what we're fighting, nothing will.  These insurgents are animals.  It's not enough for them to kill their enemy.  They go out of their way to mutilate and desecrate their bodies.  If this were an isolated incident, you might argue that it was just a few 'bad' apples, but that is not nearly the case.  These insurgents have a long pattern of obscene violence that goes well beyond the rules of engagement.  From the videotaped beheading of Nick Berg to the disturbing murder of these two young soldiers, the insurgents have proven that they are monsters and they need to be destroyed.

I will not argue that the U.S. military and the private contractors are always choir boys.  However, anything we do pales in comparison to what these animals do every day.  It is the exception, not the rule, if an illegal act is committed by our troops.  Also, when we find out about alleged atrocities, we investigate them and hold people accountable.  The insurgents are praised when they commit disgusting atrocities.

That is the difference.  Insurgents commit heinous crimes constantly and are greeted as saviors.  The U.S. does everything in its power to make sure these crimes are not committed.

What we are fighting is a barbaric culture that refuses to develop into a civilized society.  Even if we stay for a decade, we will never be able to teach them to respect human life.  That is a fight we will not win.
