Grim Report on Iraq Progress

Once again, George Bush is making the false claim that Iraq had something to do with the bombings on September 11th, 2001.  That is the argument he made today when trying to rationalize the new Iraq (lack of) progress report.  Bush declared that only 8 of 18 benchmarks set by Congress had been met, but even that number was being overly generous.  Many have argued that zero benchmarks have been met.  The White House benchmark number is simply spin to make the situation in Iraq sound better than reality.

The president asked again for more time before making a judgment on improvement.  He had the gall to say we were making progress, despite the fact that the last three months have been the deadliest ever for American soldiers.

Bush makes this argument every year and every year, Iraq gets worse.  Thirty years from now, I'm certain that an old and decrepit George W. Bush will continue to speak about how we're making progress in Iraq, but still needing more time to stabilize the country.

The fact is that George Bush knows his presidency is all about Iraq, so there is no way in hell he leaves now.  If he withdraws from Iraq, he will have to admit that his presidency was a complete failure.  You can be damn sure that he puts his legacy ahead of everything, including the safety and security of American forces.  He has proven it over and over again.

Most people already understand that Bush will be seen as the worst president in the history of the United States.  It's not even very close.  If he leaves Iraq now, he can at least save hundreds of American soldiers that will undoubtedly die over the next eighteen months of his term.  Unfortunately, he has no intention of doing that.  He will keep forces in Iraq until his term ends no matter what the progress report says.
