Six Years After September 11th

It's hard to believe that six years have passed since terrorists attacked the United States by flying commercial planes into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.  Another plane crashed into Pennsylvania.  Much has changed since that time, but much remains the same.  Is America any safer today?  Are we less safe?  Can it happen again?

After the terrorist attacks, the United States rightfully invaded Afghanistan to kill or capture the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the groups responsible for 9/11.  The U.S. was initially successful in Afghanistan and was able to drastically reduce the capability of the terrorist groups.

Unfortunately, the Bush administration quickly diverted resources away from Afghanistan and decided to invade the nation of Iraq in March of 2003.  Iraq had nothing to do with the attacks on 9/11, but that didn't stop the administration from using the incident to invade the country.

Four and a half years after the invasion of Iraq, the United States has weakened considerably, the Taliban in Afghanistan have resurfaced, and Al-Qaeda has grown stronger.  The situation in Iraq has gotten progressively worse, with the number of American soldiers dying increasing each year.

The U.S. government will soon be forced to reduce the number of troops in Iraq, not because they want to, but because they have to.  The all volunteer military of the United States has been overextended and is near breaking.

Unfortunately, many politicians (see Giuliani, Rudy & Bush, George) have used the terrorist attacks of 9/11 to further their careers and agendas.  Hopefully, if the public is paying attention, they will not let these two get away with such disgraceful conduct.  The people who died in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania deserve better.
